Fundamentals Of The Ping Pong Table
When looking for the right ping pong table, there is much to consider. However, the first aspect you need to think about before you even go table shopping, is to figure out where you plan on playing ping pong in your home.

Once you select a space, you will need to measure it, and keep these measurements with you to determine the size of table that with comfortably fit in your place of preference.

Now let’s take a closer look at the characteristics of a ping pong table so you can decide what’s best for you.

Table types - There are a variety of ping pong tables you can choose from. Tables range in size, price and functionality.

• Sedentary tables – a ping pong table that does not fold and requires a permanent place.

• Fold-up tables – Functional tables that fold upwards when not in use and can be tucked out of the way to create space. If you will need to constantly move the ping pong table out of the way, it is a good idea to choose one that can easily be setup and put away by one person.

• Outdoor tables –Tables that are metallic or have a special waterproof coating are ideal for outdoor use as they will protect the table surface from the elements.

• Small tables – Not everyone has a space that can accommodate the dimensions of standard ping pong tables (274 cm. x 152.5 cm.), therefore small tables are available. Just remember that playing on a small table is very different and should only be used for fun.

Legs – The legs of a ping pong table need to be strong and sturdy. They should stand 76 cm. Table legs with rollers are usually best, as it will allow the table to move easily. Just make sure that the rollers attached to the legs of the table are equipped with brakes to prevent the table from moving during play, or when tucked away in its sedentary position.

Thickness – Table thickness that is anywhere from 19 mm. to 25 mm. are ideal. Essentially, the only difference between the two is the price; in this case, the thicker the table, the higher the price. In addition, most professionals prefer a ping pong table with 25mm. thickness.

Surface – The surface of a table tennis table should be smooth and even. The top should not be warped, have rough spots, or patches. The surface itself can be made of any material so long as it produces a consistent ball bounce of approximately 23 cm. when dropped from a 30 cm. height.

Net – The ping pong table you purchase should come with a net. What you want to look for is a net that has soft coverings on the attachment that will grip the table. You don’t want the net scratching up the surface of the table.

There you have it, the fundamentals you need to keep in mind when selecting a ping pong table.
